Our astonishment when evil happens so close to home is a slap in the face, a beckoning to wake up and realize that this world we live in is broken. Apathetic, we may have thought that we carved out a peaceful chunk of the world for ourselves to live safely, but the evil that we’ve built walls to protect ourselves from — when it’s no longer satisfied with consuming those we keep outside — will find a way past our barriers.
So, what do we do? Do we continue to build walls? That is the way of the apathetic. The problem lies in the human heart and it is so complex. The diminishment of God’s image is the source of our destruction. The thought that “I am greater than you,” in any form, reaps destruction. Pride requires submission. Humility is the way.
